A dramatic reading from a play based on the life of Balraj Sahni 

Followed by a screening of
Do Bigha Zameen (meaning "two acres of land") is 1953 iconic film, directed by renowned director Bimal Roy, which won the Filmfare award, National award and Cannes Film Festival award (international category) in the same year. Balraj Sahni and Nirupa Roy in lead roles.

synopsis

Urban middle class life in our country today is full of paradoxes. And the play “Chauraha” tries to expose many of the contradictions in the society through different characters. The play deals with various issues that confront our society and shows how most people are in a quandary when faced with possible choices or no-choices. Communal tensions, the questions of caste, the status of women, the plight of the downtrodden, the dilemmas facing the intelligentsia, the debates over economic policies, increasing inequalities, the clashes of multiple identities – Makarand Sathe tries to capture the interplay of all such issues.  There is a zeal to change things but the status quo persists with a vengeance. There is a search for peace but there is a violent undercurrent. There is a sense of togetherness but there is opportunism and a visible disconnect.
